Xolo Q1100 review

There's no real doubt that Indian smartphone brands are giving established international companies a run for their money, but the argument that they're only able to do so by selling cheap, poorly manufactured products might not be able to hold water for very much longer. Xolo is one of a small handful of companies that isn't in a race to the bottom, and its products of late have been quite respectable in terms of looks and build quality.
Xolo has made a number of intelligent choices with its latest model, the Q1100. Its design, features and specifications are all understated and well thought out. There are no outrageous features, such as a full-HD screen or octa-core processor, which seem to be trendy things to boast about right now. Instead, there's a well-balanced set of specifications - the kind of thing buyers should really care about.

We're curious to see how the Xolo Q1100 holds up in our benchmark suite, and whether Xolo's subtle approach will pay off.
Look and feel
The Q1100 looks great, with a simple all-black body and unassuming profile. The plastic surrounding the front panel glass extends over the bottom edge like a curved lip, breaking up an otherwise ordinary rectangular shape.
The front face is almost completely dark. With the screen off, you can just about make out the outlines of the three capacitive Android buttons below the screen. Above it, there's a rather prominent Xolo logo (which we could have done without), and the clearly visible front camera.

The rear shell is made of plastic with a soft-touch coating. We're not sure how long the coating will last, as these tend to either peel off or become oily over time, but it does look good out of the box. It's also very smooth; we would have preferred something a little easier to grip.
The shell extends around the top and sides of the Q1100. The power button on the right and volume rocker on the left are actually built into the shell, and come off with it. The rear is also quite bare, apart from a small speaker grille on the bottom, a silver embossed Xolo logo right in the middle, and the camera lens and flash near the top. The camera sticks out about a millimetre beyond the rest of the body, and is surrounded by a bright silver ring.

There's small notch on the bottom of the right edge which you can use to pry the shell off, with a fingernail. A series of tiny plastic tabs around the edges hold it in place. This is the only complaint we have about the build quality of the Q1100, because it doesn't always line up perfectly, and the plastic tabs at the top stick out unless you pay close attention when snapping the shell on. The plastic is also a little creaky, and you we could hear it flex when picking up the phone or shifting our grip.
Apart from that, we're pretty impressed with the Q1100. It fits nicely in one hand, despite having a 5-inch screen. The proportions and weight also feel just about right. A lot of people who automatically dismiss Indian brands or think they would never be seen dead with a "cheap" phone should give this model a second look.

Features and specifications
The most interesting thing about the Q1100 is that it is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 system-on-a-chip (SoC), as opposed to the lower-performance chips from MediaTek and other smaller companies that are prevalent not only at this price point, but also at higher prices. Unfortunately, the perception that more cores are better has become quite firmly entrenched in the market, and so with quad-core processors becoming somewhat common, manufacturers are only too happy to produce octa-core models.
The simple fact is that not all cores are built the same, and so it doesn't really matter how many of them you have if they aren't doing all that much work. The octa-core models we've reviewed so far have excelled in certain CPU-bound tests, but their real-world performance has not been noticeably better than that of high-end quad-core models.

Additionally, many phone makers seem happy to focus only on core count while ignoring other facets of a processor, such as its graphics capabilities. On the whole, MediaTek's chips have not been able to match Qualcomm's in gaming and graphics-heavy tests.
Thus, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 is a sensible choice, rather than one that will produce breathless headlines. This SoC was designed specifically for mid-budget smartphones, and its four Krait processor cores run at 1.4GHz, along with a 450MHz Adreno 305 GPU.
The processor is supported by 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, and a 2,000mAh lithium-ion battery. The screen resolution is 720x1280; not quite full-HD, but decent enough by most standards, especially for a budget phone. You also get AGPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

Interestingly, the Q1100 comes with Android 4.3, rather than 4.2, which seems to be the version most budget manufacturers are stuck on. Xolo doesn't do much customisation in terms of visual appearance, but it does bundle a few apps, including its own Xolo Power and Xolo Secure, which you can read about in detail in our review of the Q3000.
There are also two very interesting apps for Indian users. Reverie Phonebook can display your contacts transliterated into Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telegu, Kannada or Malayalam. The interface is a bit unpolished, and spellings aren't perfect, but this is exactly the sort of thing that could really come in handy for users who aren't comfortable with English interfaces.
The other app is called TransPic, and its purpose is to translate or transliterate Hindi text into English script. The instructions within the app aren't very clear, and we couldn't detect any difference between online and offline mode. We also found that we needed to get pretty close to text on a page, which meant we couldn't always fit a full line or paragraph into each frame. Recognition accuracy was pretty impressive and there's even a button that will read out recognised text, which is just another example of how this app could prove to be very useful to non-English speakers.

Camera
Whereas most of the phone interface is pretty polished, the camera app has a very odd series of menus with far too many seemingly random options. There's only a single control button in the camera interface, which brings up a menu with icons for HDR mode, the timer, and swapping between the front and rear camera, as well as three submenus with identical icons.
The first of these contains options for photo storage location, scene mode, picture size, zero shutter lag, and even a giant histogram that blocks nearly half the screen. The second offers colour effects, toggles for face detection and touch AF, exposure options, and sliders for saturation, contrast and sharpness. The third lets you choose an ISO value, AE bracketing, red eye reduction, exposure compensation, a filter called "wavelet denoise mode", and finally the flash.

It's a bit odd that the flash and scene controls aren't accessible more easily. Between Xolo and Google, this camera app is in serious need of an overhaul.
Photos taken with the Q1100 outdoors in broad daylight were surprisingly good, with sharp focus and low noise. There's a bit of a red colour cast, but nothing too serious. Unfortunately, when fully zoomed in, you'll be able to detect excessive compression, which gives people and objects a slightly artificial look.
Photos taken indoors were a bit noisier, but detail was still clearly discernible and focusing was accurate. In darker conditions, things were a lot worse. Still, we have to remind ourselves of this phone's cost, and measure our expectations accordingly.

We found videos shot with this phone came out a bit too dark, and moving objects weren't clear enough for our liking. You shouldn't use this phone for anything more than casual clips now and then.
Performance
We were happy to see that Xolo's choice of a Qualcomm processor over a MediaTek one has paid off. Performance in our benchmarks was quite impressive, especially the graphics and gaming tests. We achieved scores of 18,953 in AnTuTu, and 9,397 overall in Quadrant. 3DMark's 720p Ice Storm scenario returned a score of 5644 points, while GFXBench managed to run at 10.6fps. This indicates a better balance of power between graphics and core processing than we are used to seeing.
Temple Run 2 and other casual titles ran without a hitch, so you should be able to run medium-intensity games at decent quality on the Xolo Q1100. When we tried watching 1080p HD videos, we noticed a bit of lag in heavily detailed scenes and when skipping around the timeline in some of our clips, which was a minor letdown. 720p clips played just fine, though. Audio volume was a bit underwhelming, but we had no complaints with regard to the clarity.
The Q1100's battery life was perhaps the biggest disappointment we faced. It lasted only 3 hours and 33 minutes in our video playback loop test, which does not bode well for performance in the real world. We wouldn't expect to get a full day of even moderate usage out of this device.

Verdict
Xolo has done a great job of upping the ante in terms of appeal. Even if you staunchly believe that you'll never buy a phone from an Indian brand (regardless of where it is actually manufactured), you'd be tempted to give the Q1100 a second look. In addition, it doesn't skimp where it really matters, which is the processor. Finally, there's the price to consider.
If there was no real competition at around the same price point, we'd be happy to recommend the Xolo Q1100, but unfortunately for it, this phone is up against the 16GB Motorola Moto G, which uses the same processor, and the Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini, which has far better battery life. The Moto G has been our favourite ever since we reviewed it, and frankly, the Xolo Q1100 hasn't managed to significantly outshine it at anything. Even the Turbo Mini, which lags in most benchmark scores, offers way better battery life.

So even though we like the Q1100, we aren't a hundred percent enthusiastic about recommending it to potential buyers. The build quality issues are minor, and we can live with a little creaking now and then. What truly concerns us is the battery life. It's no good to have a smart-looking phone with a capable processor if there's no juice to run anything on. No one wants to walk around all day with a charger or external battery, and so despite everything else that Xolo has achieved, the poor battery life is this phone's Achilles heel.

Apple iWork review

Microsoft's Office is the go-to software package for creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Google's Docs has emerged as a good, free alternative for lightweight tasks. But what's often overlooked is Apple's iWork.
Last fall, the iWork applications for the Mac -Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations- got their first major update since 2009 and now work better withiPhone and iPad versions. Apple also developed an online version that can work on Windowscomputers and let several people collaborate on a single document more easily.
Apple's iWork won't replace Office, and Google Docs is better in some ways. But after using iWork for a few months, I've come to appreciate the ways it simplifies work. It became my primary way of writing news stories at last week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain.
The best part: iWork is free with the purchase of new Apple devices (the Mac version with new Macs and the iOS apps with new iPhones or iPads). Once you get it, you can install iWork on older devices. Otherwise, each of the three apps costs $20 for Macs and $10 for mobile devices, or $90 for everything. That's a one-time fee. To use Office on multiple devices, Microsoft charges $100 a year.
Using iWork on desktops and laptops
With both Office and Google Docs, you primarily deal with a toolbox of options at the top. That's where you go to change fonts or adjust line spacing. With iWork, many of those options are moved to a palette on the right, which fills in the computer's horizontal screen much better.
More importantly, those options change depending on context. For basic text, you get basic formatting options such as font and size. Insert a chart, and you can adjust the gap between columns. Drag and drop a photo onto a Pages document, and you get image-editing tools such as cropping and color adjustment.
In a sense, the available features come to you, and you're invited to explore.
With spreadsheets, the palette on the right side presents all 267 options for formulas and calculations, arranged in categories. Click on any one for a full description of what it does and how it works.

With Excel, I use no more than a half-dozen formulas, mostly because I don't know about the others or can't be bothered to figure out the syntax. With Numbers, I choose one from a list - let's say, "ROUND." I'm then shown where to enter the number to round and the number of decimal places to use.
Another neat feature: Select a column of numbers - let's say, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. The app will automatically calculate the results using five of the most-used formulas - such as 108 for "SUM" and 18 for "AVERAGE."
Using iWork elsewhere
Although some options and templates are missing from iPhones and iPads, Apple does a good job of keeping the iOS apps consistent with the Mac applications. The main change: Instead of finding options to the right, you tap various buttons to access them.

In fact, many long-time iWork users have complained that Apple adapted the Mac version too much to achieve consistency with iOS. Some features, such as using files in Rich Text Format, went away. Apple promises to bring some of the features back in the coming months.
I would rather have that consistency.
With Office, the smartphone app is so bare-bones, I've hardly used it. And there's no Office app at all for iPads and Android tablets; you're limited to a Web version that requires a constant Internet connection. Microsoft wants to preserve Office as a selling point for its Windows tablets.
With iWork, documents are shared and synced through Apple's iCloud storage service. Changes made on the Mac show up on the iPad within seconds. Line and page breaks stay the same.
That consistency extends to some degree to the Web version, known as iWork for iCloud. Formatting remains the same. But because it's still in a "beta" test version, the Web version lacks key features. You can't track changes or view and leave comments, for instance. New features have been coming every month or two, so expect improvements over time.
Unfortunately, there's no app or iCloud support for devices running the rival Android system from Google. And for Windows, you must stay online to use iCloud.

One big omission with iWork had been the ability to work with others on the same documents. With the Web version, you can now send others a link from the Web or any of the apps. Your collaborators can open up the document on the Web. No Apple account or iWork app is needed.
It's not as smooth or as versatile as the offerings in Google Docs. When two people try to change the same iWork document at the same time, everything stops until the document's creator chooses which version to keep. With Docs and Office, each side gets the other's changes. It's not automatic with Office, but at least it works. This is one shortcoming I hope Apple addresses before the online version leaves its test phase.
It's easy to convert Office files to iWork and back, but you might lose formatting and formulas. Numbers replaced some complex formulas I had in Excel with static numbers.
Because of this, and the fact that there are no stand-alone Windows apps, iWork isn't ready yet as a replacement for Office.
A colleague in Korea had some trouble opening a Pages document I tried to share through the Web, so I had to copy text into an email message. And stories I wrote in iWork had to be pasted into a generic format for editing.
Nonetheless, iWork is a good option for personal documents that don't require a lot of sharing. If that's all you need, there's no sweeter word than free.

UC Browser review

Mobile browser apps have been steadily evolving and are now able to offer as many features as their desktop counterparts, while the default Android browser and Safari on the iPad still feel a little limited in comparison.

If you haven't already picked a favourite browser, then UC Browser is a pretty good option that's also free. The app was recently updated for Android, and we tested both that and also the UC Browser+ for the iPad. Both versions of the app are fast, load quickly and add a lot of useful features, but is that enough to get you to switch from your favourite?
UC Browser gets you all the bells and whistles that you've come to expect from a desktop browser - tabbed browsing lets you go through multiple pages quickly, while a speed dial at launch gives you quick access to your favourite sites. Support for extensions can add a lot of useful functionality as well, and you can move to full screen browsing with the touch of a button.
Overall, the browser is fast and easy to use, and loads pages quickly. The latest Android version also includes support for hardware acceleration of page loading for devices with 2GB RAM or more. However, that's still a fairly high benchmark, and only a handful of phones have that much RAM for now though newer phones will meet this requirement.
One new feature on Android is the addition of a full download manager, which is very useful when trying to save multiple files - the app also lets you choose the page elements you want to save, which can be very helpful if you either want to save only the images, or if you're on a slow connection and don't want to get stuck downloading heavy elements, for example.
The app also auto-loads the version of the page that is most suited to your connection speed, which is an interesting feature which actually does come in handy. However, there are a couple of issues.
For one thing, on a phone screen, all the options take up a fair bit of space, though there is a full screen mode to get around this. The other issue is that the tabs aren't immediately accessible - you have to call up the tabs menu to see the different pages you've loaded.

The iPad version of the app also has some great features, such as social browsing. If you sign in with Facebook, then you can see links that your friends are sharing in the sidebar to quickly open. It also lets you load a floating video, so you can watch the clip while continuing to browse pages. That's an interesting feature, though it was hard to figure out when it would actually be useful.
Page sharing is also more robust than in Safari, but again, requires you to sign-in to your various networks from the app to be useful. Possibly the best feature though, is the addition of multitouch gestures - this is something that really makes it stand out from Safari. A two-finger swipe to the left and right are back and front respectively, while two fingers swiping up opens a new tab and swiping down closes the tab.
Overall, the app is powerful, and loads pages quickly on both platforms. It's also fairly easy to use. The catch is that while it's a lot better than the default browsers, UC Browser isn't a huge standout as compared to other popular browsers out there, such as Dolphin, or Coast by Opera.
Those apps have many of the same features as well; this means that if you've taken the time to set up a browser to work the way you want, with all your bookmarks and other saved data, then it's not going to be worth making the switch now. If you're still using the stock browser though, you'll find UC Browser a worthy upgrade.

HP Pavilion 10 TouchSmart review

The netbook category might be dead now, but for a few years not too long ago, netbooks redefined budget computers, and every single PC manufacturer jumped on board when it seemed they were sweeping the world. Netbooks were intended as inexpensive computers for first-time users in places where PC penetration had typically not progressed due to cost limitations.
While popular in India and other developing markets, they also really took off with buyers in Asia and Europe who just liked the idea of having a light, reasonably cheap second or third PC that they could travel with, give their kids to use, or simply keep around as a spare. This market preferred netbooks with slightly larger screens, more attractive design, and full Windows licenses, which drove prices up and alienated budget buyers.
Then, tablets became popular, and buyers who were willing to pay for the portability and convenience of a netbook found that tablets suited them much better. In almost no time at all, manufacturers began announcing that they were exiting the netbook market to focus on tablets and portable but expensive ultrabooks instead.

Thus, there currently exists an unserved market segment for affordable computers capable of being used for real productive work. Is HP's new Pavilion 10 TouchSmart a fresh take on an old product category, and can it plug that gap? Read on to find out.
Look and feel
So, is the Pavilion 10 a netbook? It certainly looks and feels like one. A quick glance at the list of specifications seems to confirm that it is indeed equipped with just the bare basic hardware to run a desktop version of Windows. But there is one critical departure: the price. At nearly Rs. 30,000, the Pavilion 10 costs around twice as much as the last few netbooks still available in the market.
This might be explained by HP's curious decision to use a touchscreen on such a low-end machine, but even so, it seems a bit excessive. The Pavilion 10's performance will need to match its price if it wants to successfully transcend its netbook shell.

The Pavilion 10 TouchSmart does look quite distinctive, with a smooth, shiny, silver polka-dotted lid. It definitely isn't the kind of machine you'd want to carry into a stodgy corporate boardroom, though it might pass off in a less formal work environment. The design continues on the inside, with a darker version of the same pattern on the front and sides of the keyboard deck.
The keyboard is cramped and smaller than normal, which is a total throwback to the old netbook days. HP's trademark squashed arrow key cluster is even more annoying than usual thanks to the space crunch. By default, hitting any key in the Fn row will perform its secondary function, such as changing brightness and volume, turning the trackpad and Wi-Fi on and off, and controlling media playback. The F6 key, which doubles as a mute button, has a little embedded status LED which is a neat touch. The keyboard is cramped and shallow, so typing isn't exactly comfortable. At least all the important keys are in the right place.

The trackpad is also squashed up against the front edge of the device. It's nearly as wide as a regular notebook trackpad, but significantly shorter. There's also no physical button at all, though the lower edge is clickable. The trackpad is also slightly recessed, making Windows 8's swipe gestures difficult to use. We wound up inadvertently switching apps when we didn't mean to, since the trackpad is small but still detects swipes near the edge as if they originated beyond its borders.
Around the edges you'll find two USB 2.0 ports and a very welcome USB 3.0 port in addition to an Ethernet port, 3.5mm headset jack, HDMI video output and SD card reader. There's a power indicator on the power button above the keyboard, and for some reason, another one on the front left edge, next to the hard drive activity indicator. A separate charging indicator is placed next to the power socket towards the rear of the right edge.

The Pavilion 10 is certainly not ultrabook-slim, but 225mm is still reasonable. Its overall proportions, curves and weight make it seem squatter than it actually is. It might fit easily in a backpack or handbag, but at 1.45kg, it's definitely going to be noticeable.
Speaking of bags, we wish HP had thrown in a sleeve or slipcover with the Pavilion 10. Very few bags have pouches that will fit devices this size, and considering how glossy its lid is, there's no way you'll avoid scratching it up if you let it rattle around with other objects.

Features and specifications
Here's where the Pavilion 10's netbook heritage really makes itself felt. The CPU is a terribly weak, low-power AMD A4-1200, codenamed Kabini and based on the Jaguar core architecture. The A4-1200 itself is one of the least powerful Kabini models, with two cores running at only 1GHz, and with 1MB of L2 cache between them.
AMD calls its products which have CPU and GPU logic integrated on the same die APUs, or Accelerated Processing Units. The GPU component of the A4-1200 is called the Radeon HD 8180, and as the low numbers suggest, it cannot be compared in any way to discrete Radeon GPUs. This one runs at a paltry 225MHz. Interestingly, AMD has claimed superiority on the integrated graphics front for a long while, but this particular model is a low-power unit that poses hardly any threat to Intel's offerings. Forget about high-quality gaming; there's barely enough meat on these bones for basic 2D and 3D graphics.
The most attractive specification of this APU is its extremely low power consumption. At just 3.9W, the Pavilion 10 should stay cool and quiet even when stressed.

The rest of the specifications are par for the course: there's 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 + LE. HP describes the webcam as "TrueVision HD", but even though the 1280x720 image and video resolution just about barely qualifies as HD, the quality is severely underwhelming.
The Pavilion 10's screen measures 10.1 inches and runs at 1366x768, which has been the lowest common denominator for years now. At this small size it isn't a problem, and text is actually quite sharp. The screen itself is dull, and we found ourselves running it at or very close to its maximum brightness setting throughout our time with the Pavilion 10. Viewing angles aren't that impressive either.
The only feature that really stands out is the touchscreen. Considering how weak the Pavilion 10 actually is and how little you're likely to use it for, we were initially of the opinion that the touchscreen was unnecessary, and probably drove up the cost too much. However in day-to-day use, we found ourselves reaching out to jab the screen quite often. We played a few Windows 8 games and enjoyed them, but this is when we really missed being able to detach the screen or fold it down flat like a tablet. The Pavilion's hinge is also not that firm, so the screen does wobble just a tiny little bit when tapped.

Performance
The Pavilion 10's performance was completely disappointing, and that's putting it mildly. We noticed stutters in ordinary usage, long app loading times, and occasional lags when going about the most mundane tasks. We'd be okay with using this device for basic Web surfing, email, social networking, streaming the occasional YouTube video and throwing together a Word or Excel document in a pinch. For any task beyond that, we would get frustrated pretty quickly.
Our 720p test videos seemed to play well, but even our most lightly encoded 1080p sample was completely unwatchable, thanks to lags, dropped frames, and audio sync issues. Sound was okay for a notebook, but nothing spectacular.
By the time we got around to running our benchmark suite, we had no illusions left about the kind of results to expect. The SunSpider test took an astounding 850.5ms to run, and BrowserMark gave us a score of only 1593. POVRay took an excruciating 50 minutes to render its built-in benchmark, which is nearly four times as long as a machine in this price range should take.

Scores in our other test runs were equally dismal. The mechanical hard drive caused SiSoft Sandra's Physical Disk module to compute a Drive Index of only 54.4 MB/s, whereas an SSD would have scored at least ten times that. 3DMark simply refused to run, and CineBench returned a CPU score of only 35, as opposed to the low hundreds that we're used to seeing on mid-range PCs.
Battery life was a reasonable 3 hours, 44 minutes in our standard Battery Eater Pro rundown test, and 6 hours 52 minutes in the far less intense reader test, which basically just keeps the screen on with almost zero CPU or GPU activity. 
Simply put, performance is nowhere near the level we'd expect from a machine in this price class. We're now completely sure that this device deserves to be classified as a netbook, despite its touchscreen and price tag.

Verdict
The Pavilion 10 TouchSmart is grossly overpriced. It could have been a great budget option, filling the void left by the netbook category's demise. At this price you can easily buy a much better laptop from pretty much every manufacturer out there, including HP itself! You should look for at least a 14- or 15-inch screen and an Intel Core i3 processor, though the RAM, hard drive and screen resolution would likely be the same.
If you're really interested in having a touchscreen device, this might be the cheapest one you can find. Still, due to its non-hybrid design and weak performance, you won't really enjoy the features that a Windows 8 tablet or hybrid can offer. A touchscreen is nice to have, but we don't think this is the kind of device that benefits from having one.
Unfortunately, we're left with the conclusion that a netbook by any other name is still a netbook. Given a choice between this machine for Rs. 30,000 or an exact copy minus the touchscreen for half or even two-thirds the price, there's no doubt we'd choose the latter.

Bose SoundTouch 30 Wi-Fi music system review

We're moving firmly into the wireless age now, and having to plug your phone or tablet into your speakers is utterly behind the times. While the use of Bluetooth to connect audio devices is fairly widespread, the popularity of streamed music is built around everyone's favourite technology - Wi-Fi.
This is due, in no small part, to Apple's proprietary AirPlay platform. AirPlay made it fast, and practically foolproof, to connect your speakers and your playback devices, and thanks to the huge popularity of Apple's iPhone and iPad devices, an ecosystem of third-party speakers quickly sprang up as well.
Bose's new SoundTouch line is a family of wireless speakers that support AirPlay for easy wireless streaming. The SoundTouch Portable and the SoundTouch 20 both cost Rs. 32,515 which is already a fairly high price to pay for wireless speakers, but the SoundTouch 30 costs a staggering Rs. 52,763. After spending some time with the SoundTouch 30 though, it has become apparent why Bose is charging such a high price.

The SoundTouch 30 can be connected to your mobile phone or tablet, or you could also connect it to your computer over the Wi-Fi network, where it can access your iTunes library. Aside from that, there's also a 3.5mm input, so you can plug in a device directly as well. This means that you don't necessarily have to use it only with your Apple devices - it could be used to connect to your DVD player or music system, and used as a main speaker and not just for music streaming. The audio quality is good enough that this is actually a valid use of the speakers.
Look and feel
The SoundTouch 30 is a moderately large speaker. It's 9.7-inches tall, 17.1-inches wide, and 7.1-inches deep. The white top and back panels, and the black mesh front look elegant, but the LCD display in the centre of the mesh looks outdated.
There are 10 buttons tightly clustered on top-power, AUX (which switches the input to the standard 3.5mm jack), volume up and down, and six audio presets. The LCD display is a long vertical panel that reaches from the top to halfway down the front face, and lets you see the source, preset, Wi-Fi connection and volume level.
Not only is this speaker bulky, it's also very heavy. The Bose SoundTouch 30 weighs 8.39kgs, and the smooth shape also doesn't give you a very good grip on the speaker. This means that the speaker isn't very portable and you won't be moving it from room to room. While the wireless connectivity means that you can easily use it with different devices, you can't move these speakers around with you very easily.

Audio performance
The good thing is that the Bose SoundTouch 30 sounds good enough that you can happily use it as a primary speaker. Obviously, that's a qualified suggestion - no one is saying that it's a high-end audiophile product, or a replacement for a surround sound home theatre system. But, if you're primarily looking for simple connectivity, and good, loud sound, then the Bose SoundTouch 30 is a good option.
To test the speakers, we first listened to a variety of music using the wireless option. The speakers are clear, possibly one of the best sounding in their size. You can get better audio for the price, but in larger enclosures.
The sound remains clear even if you raise the volume, and a range of pop, classical, hip-hop and rock songs, both classic and contemporary all sounded good. This is something Bose is justifiably famous for, and goes a long way towards justifying the high cost of the SoundTouch 30.
We further tested the speaker by connecting the AUX cable to a TV and watching a movie using this setup. The speaker sounded pretty good but obviously it's not designed for surround sound; and while it is probably still better than the speakers in most television sets, this is certainly not an ideal way of using these speakers. Still, if you're on a budget and are looking for a multipurpose device to fulfil multiple roles, then the Bose SoundTouch 30 does seem like a possibility.

Connectivity and setup
The one major downside is connectivity. Setting up the speakers is a painful process that takes both time and multiple downloads to complete. Just connecting to the Wi-Fi requires you to plug the speakers into your PC using a USB cable, which is probably not where you're going to use them eventually, so you end up lugging around a huge and heavy speaker just to set them up. Once you've got it up and running, things are pretty painless, but the initial setup is a disaster.
The other, smaller problem, is the Bose app on your mobile or PC which is used to access your music; the user interface looks like it was made at the turn of the millennium, it's hard to navigate and doesn't communicate anything. Frankly, given the quality of the hardware, the software side of things is a huge letdown.
The Bose SoundTouch 30 also comes with an Ethernet port, which will come in handy in case you do not have Wi-Fi connectivity at your place.
Verdict
Given the high cost, it's hard to recommend the Bose SoundTouch 30, particularly as it won't be any audiophile's choice as the primary speaker. This is an interesting device which could be used in multiple scenarios, and there's no denying that it sounds good, within its category. Bose does need to improve the software side of things, but the biggest problem goes away once you've set it up The library software on the other hand has been getting updates, and will likely continue to improve slowly. The question is whether you trust them to get it right eventually or not.

Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini review

Micromax is currently sitting pretty in the number two slot as far as total shipments go in the Indian smartphone market, which goes to show that the company has managed to make a name for itself in a relatively short period of time despite being up against major established brands such as Samsung and Nokia. That in itself reveals that Indian smartphone buyers are motivated by price, looks and features, and are willing to spend reasonable amounts of money on a smartphone even if it doesn't come with the assurance of a huge international conglomerate behind it.
When compared to devices from major manufacturers, Micromax products haven't always come out looking good. They're undeniably aimed at budget-minded buyers, and thus things like construction quality and raw performance tend to suffer. That said, things have been improving slowly over time and the company has begun to move more into the mainstream, shedding its "China-made" image along the way.

Micromax plays in the sub-Rs. 20,000 category, and offers quite a diverse range of smartphones. The Canvas Turbo Mini is comfortably priced at Rs. 12,000 (street price) which clearly positions it below the company's (relatively) premium offerings. Several manufacturers have come out with "mini" versions of their flagship products, offering smaller screen sizes and more modest specifications for a little less money. Micromax has matched the trend with this device.
Interestingly, while Indian brands are slowly experimenting with more expensive products, Motorola has attacked the Rs. 12,000 - 15,000 space that these companies have done so well in of late. TheCanvas Turbo Mini is priced in line with the recently launched Moto G. Given how happy we were with that phone's price, performance and features, the Canvas Turbo Mini will have to put up a very strong fight.

Look and feel
The Turbo Mini is meant to complement last year's Canvas Turbo, which had a 5-inch full-HD screen and 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Even though 4.65 inches isn't exactly a huge step down, we found this phone earns its "Mini" tag by being light and small enough to be comfortable in one hand, while still offering a decent-sized screen.
There is definitely a family resemblance between the Canvas Turbo Mini and its bigger sibling. They both share the same overall shape and very similar front faces. Little touches such as the front and rear speaker grilles and the ring around the rear camera lens also feel familiar on the Turbo Mini.

Still, even though these two models feel like part of a family, Micromax on the whole doesn't seem to have its own design style. This phone isn't an outright copy of a major manufacturer's design, but there are definite cues from Samsung's style on the front panel, while the rear echoes of some ofHTC's older products. Just for good measure, the Canvas Turbo Mini also comes in a rounded plastic box that seems directly inspired by Apple's iPhone 5c and iPod touch packaging.
In fact the front and back aren't alike at all. While the front panel is all white, the rear is made of a grey plastic that might be supposed to look like metal. The unit we received for review was quite badly scuffed and scratched, and even though we don't know how it was treated before it got to us, this doesn't bode well for the long-term life of this phone.

The rear panel is made of a large central panel with smaller strips along the top and bottom. Of these, only the top one is meant to come off, but we found that the lower one wasn't very well fastened and didn't line up with the rest of the body properly. You won't see any branding in the front, but Micromax evidently deemed it necessary to put two logos on the rear panel. While the company's punching-fist M! logotype is a very clever bit of design, we would have been happy enough with just one copy of it.
For some reason, the primary (Micro-) SIM card goes into a tray on the phone's left edge while the secondary (regular) SIM and microSD cards fit into slots under the upper back panel, flanking the raised rear camera. You can pop the SIM tray out using a neat-looking eject pin with Micromax's logo embossed on it that you'll find packed in the box. There's nothing on the bottom, and you'll find both the Micro-USB charging port and 3.5mm headset jack on the top edge. The power and volume rocker buttons are on the right edge, but we weren't happy with the fact that they're quite sharp-edged and also raised from the phone's surface, making it the phone a little uncomfortable to hold.

All in all, we're not entirely happy with the Canvas Turbo Mini's construction quality. Comparisons to the Moto G are inevitable, and there's just no doubt about which one we'd consider the better of the two. When we said the Moto G had rewritten the rules of this price band, we weren't kidding. Micromax has a lot to learn if it wants to catch up.
Features and specifications
As with most budget Android phones that boast of "quad-core" processors, this one is built around a Mediatek CPU. The MT6582 is not exactly a speed demon, even with four cores running at up to 1.3GHz. The GPU core is a Mali-400MP which is also commonly found in low-end devices. There's 1GB of RAM and a paltry 4GB of built-in storage, less than half of which is available to the user for apps and data. You'll need to invest in at least a 16GB microSD card if you want to use this phone for pretty much anything other than making calls and sending text messages.

Luckily, the screen isn't bad at all. You won't get the widest viewing angles or most accurate colour reproduction, but 720x1280 at 4.65 inches comes to a crisp, sharp 320dpi. Text is easy to read and the Android interface looks great.
The battery is non-removable, and at 1800mAh is definitely not on the higher capacity side. The rear camera takes 8-megapixel shots while the front camera is good enough for 5-megapixel selfies. Beyond this, there isn't much to say about the Canvas Turbo Mini.
Software
It comes as no surprise that this phone runs Android 4.2.2, but we're going to point out that the Moto G runs the latest version, 4.4. Micromax has customised the interface a little bit, but nowhere near as much as Samsung and HTC do, for example. The icons in the main menu are all different, and certain screens, such as the notification flyout and settings app have been given white backgrounds instead of black. Rather than a button for quick settings at the top of the screen, Micromax has used two buttons at the bottom to divide the flyout into two sections, "Notification" and "Switch". Beyond that, it's pretty much vanilla stock Android.
Micromax has thrown in a few apps and games, which you might or might not find useful. The three games are all rather basic and allow you to play only a few times before you're asked to pay Rs. 99 to "unlock" them. M! Live is a link to an online app store that opens in your Web browser. The apps look rather spammy and even though there are a few big names such as The Sims 3 and Plants vs Zombies, clicking them led nowhere. When we tried clicking on the name of a free game for more information, an APK file download began automatically. This is a bit of a security risk, since there's no information about where it came from or what it might want to do with your phone.

Luckily, the Canvas Turbo Mini is set to block installation of apps obtained from outside the Google Play store by default. If Micromax wants users to use their own M! Live website, it makes no sense for them to block APK installations. On the other hand, we're glad that this basic security measure is in place and have no problem ignoring the existence of M! Live altogether.
Micromax also advertises Rs. 99 worth of free content from its store to users. You have to sign up with your phone number, and you'll receive an SMS with a code. From there, you're prompted to fill out a survey or download a promotional app, which is the height of spammy behaviour and totally belies Micromax's promise of free content. You can apply for a credit card, download a branded promotional app (which is otherwise totally free in the Play store) or part with your personal information - none of which are appealing options. The screen of options claims you don't have to register for anything, you only have to provide information - which means giving your personal details to unknown telemarketers who will then pester you to sign up for a credit card or insurance policy. We're highly disappointed to see Micromax putting its name on such a shady money-making scheme and even worse, trying to pass it off as a benefit for customers.

Micromax continues its intrusive behaviour by preloaded custom branded versions of Spuul, a video streaming service, Hike, a messaging app, the Opera Mini web browser, and Kingsoft Office. Of these, only Opera and Kingsoft are genuinely useful. Kingsoft in particular deserves a mention for its excellent handling of heavily formatted Word and Excel documents, along with PDFs, plain text files, and a variety of other formats.
Camera
The camera app has also been customized, and we liked the way controls such as the panorama mode and ISO settings are easily accessible. The custom app also has two little tricks built in, both of which sound good on paper but are utterly useless in practice. The first is GIF animation. It sounds simple enough, but the app tries to go for a cinemagraph effect where you can make part of a frame move while the rest stays static. The effect is extremely crude, and the resultant GIF file itself is grainy and low-quality. We'd be much happier trimming clips from a video.

The second trick is called Remove Object, and it tries to take multiple shots in order to track objects moving between them, and then remove them from a frame. On the rare occasion that something moving was actually detected, we were left with poorly defined blurs instead of clear background.
We quickly dispensed with the special effects and found that for all its other shortcomings, the Canvas Turbo Mini actually has a pretty decent camera. We were pleasantly surprised to see that images taken in all sorts of lighting conditions were clear and detailed. In daylight, colours were vibrant and textures on things like tree bark were captured decently well. There definitely is noise and compression, but for this price, we aren't complaining.

The rear camera does fairly well at night too, both with and without the flash. Videos were more than adequate at 720p, though you don't get any sort of stabilisation. However it was the front camera that most impressed us. We found shots of people were a bit washed out and overexposed, but even then the quality is better than many other phones' front-facing cameras.
Performance
There isn't much good news as far as performance goes. There were regular slight but noticeable lags throughout our time with this phone, especially when switching between apps and jumping in and out of menus. HD video playback was a mixed bag - some of our 720p test files played just fine, but in most cases the phone stuttered badly during intensive scenes and when we tried jumping up and down the timeline. 1080p video playback depended entirely on the codec and bitrate used.
In terms of benchmark tests, we ran our usual suite of CPU and GPU tests. While general processing tasks weren't too terrible, the Canvas Turbo Mini fell quite short in the graphics department. We saw scores of 16,786 in AnTuTu and 5,737 in Quadrant, but only 6.5fps in GFXbench's gaming simulation and 2,001 in 3DMark's Ice Storm Extreme graphics runthrough.

Simple games such as Temple Run 2 worked perfectly well and we had no complaints. If you like this type of game to while away the time while commuting, you won't have any problem with this phone.
The battery lasted for 5 hours, 41 minutes in our video loop test, which was less than we would have liked. Even with casual usage, the percentage meter seemed to drop awfully quickly. We're not confident of getting a full day's work done on a single charge.

Verdict
With an MRP of Rs. 14,490 (but a street price closer to Rs. 12,000), the Canvas Turbo Mini goes right up against the Motorola Moto G in the market. We had only two issues with the Moto G; its camera and non-expandable storage. These are two areas in which the Canvas Turbo Mini has the advantage, but in every other aspect, the Moto G is hands down the superior product. It isn't just about performance: the Moto G is built better, looks better, and feels like it will last much longer.
The Canvas Turbo Mini is a nice enough phone, but like we said in our Moto G review, that product has changed the game. Micromax, which struck fear into the hearts of the world's biggest brands by selling good-enough products at low enough prices, now finds itself on the other side of that coin.

Sony Xperia Z2: First impressions

I typically have headphones on when I'm home in New York, whether it's during a jog or a commute. I often crank the volume up, at the risk of hearing loss, so that I could hear my favorite podcasts over loud subways and honking cars.
I was excited to see noise-cancelling technology in Sony's new Xperia Z2 smartphone. I've resisted investing in pricey noise-cancelling sets because I'm prone to lose or break them. If it's going to be built into a phone, perhaps I can use that instead of my iPod.
Alas, I find the new feature to be more promise than practical, based on the brief time I had with the phone at this week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain.
But first, I'll go through other features that may appeal to some people. The phone is due to come out in March. Sony hasn't announced a price, though its phones typically sell for $500 to $600 in the U.S. without subsidies or a contract.
Waterproof
Sony's smartphones are distinctive in being waterproof. It's not something I've felt that I've needed, but you might find it useful if you work as a lifeguard or live near a beach.

That's even better than the 16 megapixels in Samsung's new Galaxy S5. But lens quality and the focus mechanism are also important. I didn't get to try out the Z2's camera, but it's the same one in the Xperia Z1s, which I've had mixed results with.
4K video recording
It's impressive that the phone can capture video with four times the details as full high-definition video. But 4K displays are still expensive, so you won't appreciate the extra sharpness for a while. It's more for people who want to take quality video now for the day 4K becomes more common.
Now, back to the noise. The phone analyzes ambient noise and produces a countering signal. In simple terms, if the noise is a 7, the phone subtracts 7 to bring it to zero. If the noise is a 5, the phone subtracts 5.
Unfortunately, it requires special in-ear headphones, which Sony is selling for 60 euros ($82). A sensor in the earpiece detects the noise, so the phone knows what countering signal to send. This approach keeps the headphones smaller and cheaper than typical noise-cancelling headphones.
Noise cancellation is optimized for the office, for planes and for buses or trains. You choose one in the settings.
I tried the headphones surrounded by simulated train and plane noise. The technology works, but it doesn't filter out the external noise completely. It also requires me to press the earpiece deep into my ears to notice a difference.
Sony tells me the earpiece covers come in three sizes, so a larger one might have helped. I look forward to testing the feature more thoroughly.
For now, I'll keep my iPod.
